DBYC Notices: Swing Moorings

Swing Moorings

Just a quick reminder for those owners with boats on swing moorings. In the Winter months, we’ve had two boats break free from their moorings and two boats sink! The most recent, Skylark, went to the bottom at her mooring, watched by a MarDep boat, 2 Fire Boats, a Police Boat (each of them launching a rib) and 2 diver support boats - ie 10 emergency services vessels in action. Meanwhile, on the hardstand, 3 Fire trucks including the Diver Support truck all the way from TST, a Snorkel truck and an Ambulance arrived. Three points spring to mind:

1.  Whilst it is re-assuring that such a response can be mounted by our emergency services, one’s first action (in a non-life-threatening situation) might be to contact the Marina Club on 2987 9591 - they have various pumps standing by and may be able to offer assistance.

2.  If a boat begins to settle at its mooring or in the marina, consider towing to the Marina Club hardstand, where it can be stropped, pumped dry then lifted for further investigation and repair.

3.  Lastly, even (or especially) in the off-season, it is worth checking the integrity of your boat and mooring on a weekly basis.

For all swing-mooring owners, please note that the condition of all Nim Shue Wan moorings laid over 5 years ago (ie most of them) should be checked. You need to check the mooring chain, top and bottom (the DBYC PowerDive is ideal, if you have a diving certificate and, at this time of year, a wet suit) or hire a diver to do it for you. is recommended (2576 5655 / 9820 5502) and he can even arrange to replace the mooring tackle, if required. Prices vary, so please contact Tony direct - but do it soon, before you incur the expense of putting your boat on the rocks! For owners of younger moorings, you still need to check the mooring condition periodically. In particular, the cheaper swivels can rust and freeze, resulting in an over-stressed mooring bridle, so please check your mooring asap, or arrange for Tony to do it for you.
