Sunday morning the 25th of May: The Day began with heavy rain showers however by 9.00 AM when the first yacht started the worst was over and a nice breeze had set up.
Starting was a simple affair with the start line between the south side of the marina entrance and Lizard rock on the other side of the channel into Nim Shiu Wan. Being a pursuit event the 11 yachts started at their individually allocated start times between 9.00 AM and 10.00AM.
The course was simple, get from start to the finish line at Stanley by the fastest sailing route possible, which with the southerly wind allowed all yachts to bear off after Peng Chau and sail up the Lamma Channel on a tight lead all the way to the headland off Stanley. The two greatest challenges were making the correct allowance for tide and where and when to cross the main shipping channel. Unfortunately the wind dropped later in the morning and the smaller yachts struggled up the channel especially those sailing up the Lamma side.
The strong winds earlier in the morning resulted in the larger leading yachts arriving at Stanley earlier than anticipated and Epic crossed the line first with Salalah a few minutes behind, then Rosemary third. The next four yachts crossed in a close group not long after and only one yacht, Bliss missed the 1.00 PM cut off time by about 10 minutes.
The transfer of all the crews to shore went without a hitch thanks to Ian and Sam and their great RIB Seafari. This was far better than previous years where yacht crews had to make their own way ashore.
The staff at the Boathouse restaurant were as usual amazing even with ten more crew than anticipated and never got flustered, providing excellent service and great food.
I would like to thank our sponsors and all the club members who participated and helped to make the event a success. Igors Group who have supported the DBYC in all the Stanley Cruises to date provided a great lunch and donated the first, second and fourth prizes. Also Saffron Cruises who provided the third prize and also arranged for the use of Seafari. Finally I would also like to thank the DBYC handicapping committee who did a great job as evidenced in the close finish of most of the yachts.
