Summer 2007 was full of activities and the season isn’t over yet.
Alain Bedard organized a truly magnificent event with plenty of unexpected wind on day one and challenging light-wind tactics on day two. The Mediterranean dinner organized by the ABC on the terrace with all the boats docked below and a full moon was the setting to a legendary party. Activities ran into the early hours with crews of workmen operating an earth moving machine keeping most of us out of touch with our dreams.
Everybody was curious to see how the brand new additions to the fleet Salalah and Harlequin would fare. Salalah had some technical problems on day one and had to retire but until then was doing well. Harlequin won. She was faster than anyone had expected including the handicapping committee who had to readjust her handicap on day two and then readjust it once more: a total drop from 880 to 850. This was a reminder of how difficult it is to give a performance number to a new boat with no history. In any case a warm welcome to the new boats in the fleet. (The full story on the MIR will be published by Alain soon)
October saw the last of the training courses successfully completed. 22 new club members with 3 actively looking to purchase a boat to keep in DB. Theoretically, if we could do this every year, within a few years our fleet would double in size making our events more fun. Other pupils are actively taking part in races by crewing on club boats that are in need of an additional hand. In the MIR they crewed on Thea, Arconia and Rosemary.
Finally the training courses brought in cash that practically doubled the club’s budget. The training is not only a thing to do because most clubs do it; it’s beneficial to the club because it brings in new members, adds boats to the fleet and enhances club finances. Please support it and divulge it’s presence to everybody you know. A special thank to the people who dedicated their time and boats to the Training:
Paolo Alvera., Alain Bedard, Janine Broeckhuizen, Al Doherthy., Lindsay Pickles and Jan Neuhaeusser.
Finally a special thanks to Stephan Kottek for editing my training booklet and Jim Fernie for polishing the syntax;.
Good participation (7 boats) to the Soko Overnight cruise was instrumental to the success of the beach party with good food, bonfire and Richard Winter’s guitar.
Gordon Geko is for sale. In my opinion a good buy at $85,000 including the mooring.
Please don’t forget the Disney Islands Regatta, our last of the season on November 11th. Your participation will ensure the success of the event.
The handicapping committee has been busy and although the statistical handicapping system took a while to finish, it will be implemented next season together with the IRC and the two will run in parallel within the same races. All within the committee (Paolo, Jim, Torben, Ken, Andy and Jan) are 100% behind the new system and will do their best to get it ready in time.
The Christmas part will be at ZAK’s (top floor) on November 30th 7pm. If you don’t receive an invitation by Tuesday, please send me an email. Book early because space is limited.
