DBYC Newsletters: September 2009

Dear DBYC,

Last month marked the first decade of the DBYC, ie 10 years since our first regatta back in September 1999 - Happy Birthday!

Back then, the events were advertised by flyers and word-of-mouth, and entries were received by mail or fax - no quick and easy e-mail or web sites in those days! Since then we've formally established the Club, organised over 60 racing, cruising, social and training events (every one successful), set up a web site, laid moorings, built a line of DBYC merchandise (as well as a healthy bank balance), established training courses for novices, and seen an influx of over 30 yachts - half of them new!

This wouldn't have happened without the efforts of many, and the active participation of so many more. Our thanks go to the members of the Executive Committee (some serving since forming the Club in '99), all the race-, cruise- and party-organisers, the trainers, the merchandising team (procurement & sales), the webmasters, and the countless supporters (normally wives & families, it has to be said) - we couldn't have done it without you.

Similarly, it would have been hard to have established our various DBYC events (many of them now classics, such as the Tsing Ma Regatta) without the generous support of our many sponsors. They are too numerous to list here, but we must acknowledge the particular assistance of Hong Kong Resorts and the DB Marina Club which have been stalwarts from the early days, and recently included sponsorship of the 10th Anniversary Race (with The Bounty) and our up-coming Middle Island Regatta.

As mentioned, we celebrated those first 10 Years on Saturday, 12th September with a Pirate-themed Pursuit Race, followed by raft-up (piss-up) then dinner ashore at Hemingway's. The full event report can be found here, but suffice to say, a great time was had by all!

Prepare to fire... Fire...! Vega & Harlequin A tight squeeze... Skellum attacks... The winners!

And so to the next 10 Years, starting with our immediate upcoming events...

Middle Island Regatta - 31 Oct/1 Nov.  A repeat of this very popular event, this year's MIR will comprise a sporty passage race from DB-Middle Island to work up a thirst, quenched by ice-cold beer on arrival (see pic below), then a prize-giving and Indian-themed feast courtesy of the ABC. After an overnight aboard, and breakfast at Middle Island, the fleet will then pursuit race back to DB, leaving ample time for the overall prize-giving party on the marina headland. The NoR will be published shortly with more details, but best get your crew organised now!

Sokos Rally - 14/15 Nov.  The weather will be perfect for cruising by then, and we seem to have developed a taste for pursuit racing, so we're going to combine the two: cruising or pursuit racing (your choice) to the Soko Islands on 14th November for an overnight beach-party! Richard Winter is coordinating again, with details to follow. As always, motor vessels very welcome to join the fun. Spread the word and contact sokos@dbyc.net to sign up!

DBYC Xmas Party - 11 Dec.  This year's Xmas party is being planned now for 11th December. Send any venue suggestions/requests to mail@dbyc.net soonest.

See you on the water!
