DBYC DB Regatta 2011

Once again we had a fantastic day for the Discovery Bay Regatta. This was Allegro‘s 3rd running of the event and they had a great time on the Committee Boat as always. Read on for the full Race Officer’s report...

Discovery Bay Regatta 2011 - RO’s Report

As we have come to expect from our Members, there was a great turn out again this year, and for that we would like to thank everyone for turning out.  It makes the effort of planning and running the event worthwhile to see you all enjoy a great day on the water. Particularly so, as there were so many prizes to give away, yet again.  Every yacht that entered left with something at the prize-giving, held same-day at the DBMC Bilge Bar.

The large fleet allowed us to run two divisions, split by an HKPN of 1000. The starts were staggered 10 minutes apart, planned to end in a mini-pursuit back to DBMC from the Hei Ling Chau typhoon shelter under spinnaker to finish. As you can see from the photo’s we were not disappointed. We even managed to get Heartbeat to actually fly her spinnaker and it looked great!

The start of both races went off without a hitch, with no extra flags needed to be flown from the Committee Boat (thanks). It was great to see so many boats lurking at the start line with no close calls or any yelling. It says a lot about the friendly and relaxed style of our sailing club.

Div B saw the usual suspects: Sandmartin, Rosemary, Shockwave (winner) and Arconia just to name a few.  It was also good to see that Sex Drive had no trouble attracting crew to their newly-refurbished rigged sloop. Div A as usual was a slightly larger division, and the start was very exciting, but just as controlled as our Div B yachts without any protests or yelling heard in the committee boat. (Did I already say thanks?). The figure-8 course was well contested and we managed to get some stunning photo’s of the yachts as they passed the Committee Boat through the middle of the race. For now, they are posted here, where you can download the ones you like.

And the results? Shockwave took a well-deserved win in Div B. The day however went to Boadicea, who not only won Div A, but were also overall regatta winners. Well done all.

After we finished with the fun stuff on the water, the other fun stuff started up in the Bilge Bar, where we had another healthy turn-out with approx 80 DBYC members debating their race and receiving prizes. For that I must mention our fantastic sponsors again as without them we would not have so many prizes to present.

Special thanks go to ...

Roenel Turner, LIFE STYLE HOMES who once again gave us two lovely bottles of Champagne
Stephanie Hogan from the ECLIPSE GROUP OF RESTAURANTS, who awarded dining coupons at their various restaurants in Hong Kong and Macau to the value of $3,000
Andy and ZAKS who also gave us a dining voucher for the lucky winner
Dave and Gary from HEMINGWAYS BY THE BAY
Greg Walker from KOH TOMYUMS
And of course, the Managaement & staff at DISCOVERY BAY MARINA CLUB

Finally, your entrance fee was used to purchase 12 (yes 12) bottles of Tanduay, and 5 sailing books from West Marine (including titles such as: STORM TACTICS, COMPLETE ANCHORING HANDBOOK and how can we forget, HOW TO READ NAVIGATION CHARTS, to name a few).

Jacqui and I had a great time hosting the event again this year, and I’d like to say a special thanks to her for helping, as usual, with all the stuff I leave to the last minute (everything).
