Epic takes on water

Arconia's crew forgot their sunblock

Sunday, April first turned out fine and breezy for the DBYC April Fools rally and lunch at the Boathouse, Stanley. A stiff Easterly 5-6 afforded an exciting beat from Discovery Bay, with particularly gusty conditions through the Lamma Channel.

Departing the Discovery Bay marina, a well-reefed Arconia took the lead from the start, with Epic (pictured) and Go Ahead close behind. It takes a good breeze to get a Vagabond 47 going well, so the Epic crew were revelling in the conditions when a leeward port light popped and hosed the saloon with a hundred gallons of high pressure brine. However, the leading boats remained tight together until just west of Lamma, where the usual hole endured – even in a strong monsoon. The reefs were dropped temporarily, and Arconia extended her lead by closing Lamma to shorten the tack across the flood. Several sail changes later, the blustery race down the channel to Stanley was then won by the boat with the least canvas.

Touch of Class and Aisling V, both from Clearwater Bay, joined the fleet as they anchored off the recently re-located Murray House and started the protracted shuttle-run ashore with a single tender. With no sanpans available, perhaps Stanley Main Street is not used to invasion from the sea?

Chris Lenz and his staff at The Boathouse supplied lashings of hospitality and many of the prizes. Fragrant Harbour magazine also supported the event, with the very close results as follows:

First Place: (Dinner for Two at Stormy Weather) Arconia3:16 @ DBPN 1090 = 3:00

Second Place (Fragrant Harbour goody bag) Epic 3:50 @ DBPN 1120 = 3:35.36

Third Place(Boathouse Champagne) Go Ahead 3:52 @ DBPN 1130 = 3:35.31

Peter Booth of Aisling V was winner of the traditional ‘Rear End’ Trophy and another Boathouse bottle of wine, being the last to the bar (harsh rules) as a result of his inflatable half-marathon.

The Rugby Sevens resulted in fewer numbers than usual for DBYC events; indeed, many skippers doubled up, being unable to find crew. However, great winds, great grub, great day out was the consensus for the day.
