DBYC Results: DB Regatta Results - 28 November 2004

Well, with the lovely sunny weather, the experts predicted a battle between the Northerly gradient wind and a developing sea breeze - and that’s what we got!

The start for Race 1 got away OK at 1000, as did the first triangular lap around the cans but holes quickly formed, making for a tricky second beat. Wings caught and overtook Wizard and Atmoshphere at this stage, managing to keep moving as the breeze quickly failed. The rest of the pack lay becalmed at the leeward mark, so Race Officer Andy Kung finished the race short there for the front three boats and the crews retired to the shade for brunch and a snooze.

Race 2 was planned to be an islands course, but with sails still flogging around the start line, the RO called for a ‘drag race’ straight to the finish off DB marina, where the BBQ awaited. He set a revised time of 1330 for the warning signal and, as the start approached, the Southerly sea breeze could be seen approaching rapidly - perfectly timed.

Unfortunately, nobody foresaw how quick and how fresh the breeze would pick up, so the ‘drag race’ became exactly that, under spinnaker on a spanking beam reach, taking only minutes to reach the finish. Frustrated, most boats then turned straight back out to sea for a refreshing thrash around the bay in a lovely F3-4. Next time we’ll have a Plan C up our sleeves!

Anyway, with a BBQ and all the prizes arranged, the Race Committee managed to throw together some results, as below. Congratulations go to Wings for a well-deserved first place due, in the main, to their ability to keep the boat moving in the lightest of airs in Race 1.

Our thanks, once again go to Race Officer Andy Kung, support team Lindsay Pickles and Steve Shutt aboard Phish, Erica Cartledge for prizes and merchandise and last, but not least, David Chau and the DB Marina Club for their sponsorship of the event.
