DBYC Newsletters: December 2006

First of all, up-coming events:

Drag Racing - Sun, 10 Dec.  We’ve been threatening a repeat of the popular ‘Drag Racing’ all year, so who can make Sun, 10 Dec? (click here for last year’s report). We have 8 boats already, but the more the merrier. No entry forms or fees, just reply to racing@dbyc.net and we’ll see you at the briefing on the Bilge Bar terrace at 0900 on Sunday morning. Forecast: Sunny, 23 degs, with N’ly 4-5. Perfect.

Boxing Day Cruise - Tue, 26 Dec.  Last event of the year, anyone up for the traditional Boxing Day cruise? A low-key sail, then a short hike and picnic somewhere (perhaps Lamma’s “dog-leg bay") to work off the previous day’s excesses. Please contact cruising@dbyc.net if you are keen.

Tsing Ma Regatta.  A provisional date for your diaries - 28/29 April 2007.

And so to our most recent event...

Xmas Cruise aboard Star PiscesWhat a party! We’ll leave the pictures to tell the story (they’ll be published on the web site before long), but safe to say that everyone looked very smart, and a grand time was had by all.

A short speech included thanks to the Committee for all their efforts on the Club’s behalf throughout the year (bottles of bubbly all round). It also touched on a number of proposed changes that can be expected at the AGM in April. Here they are again, FYI...

General Secretary.  We are well past the stage where we can expect one or two volunteers to do all the donkey work. The Committee proposes to hire a Gen Sec on a part-time basis. Any volunteers?

Club Boat.  Sail-training is very popular, and an important avenue for recruiting new members. We’ll be looking at procuring an Impala-sized boat for training and charter by members next year.

Subscriptions.  Although Club funds are very healthy, we’ll need to ‘broaden the tax base’ to pay for all this. No, not GST, just a robust increase in subs from their present level. They’ll still be cheap, but allow a healthier and fairer contribution to the Club’s calendar of events.

More Help on the Committee.  We need a couple more volunteers on the Committee - specifically, a Media Rep (photo-handling, ad-composition, etc) and a Sponsors Rep. The idea being to spread the effort a little wider for our various events.

New Commodore.  Yes, after eight years in the post, the time has come for fresh blood and new ideas. There is a lot of talent out there - who is going to step up? We have four months to decide...

A Merry Christmas everyone, and all the very best for 2007!

Regards,
Jim Fernie

PS.  Very many thanks to all who arranged and contributed to the lovely surprise Xmas pressie - an oil painting of Wizard. A lovely thought, and it will take pride of place beside our sailing trophies.
