This new event, sponsored by and routing around Hong Kong Disneyland, went off without a hitch - right up to the Black Rain Storm warning, and the black rain storm that immediately preceded it!
We did manage the first of the two planned races, though, with Wizard taking first place just 10 minutes ahead of Atmosphere. Xakanaxa, the Pickles & Huggins’ new and surprisingly fast Bavaria 42, then beat Shockwave for third place by 11 secs on corrected time. The heavens opened after that.
The coal-black CB that blew through also explains the number of DNF’s, as the back-markers were caught with sparklers going off all around them!
Skellum elected to withdraw and motor home, and crewman Stephan Kottek was lowering the outboard when a near-miss zapped him through the engine - you can see the singed hair-do even today. Yellow Bolero probably did the sensible thing, dropping sail and anchor to wait it out. The rest of the fleet struggled to finish in heavy rain, with winds gusting from squall to squat. And back again. Hardy bunch, the DBYC.

Start 1: The calm before the storm.
