DBYC Newsletters: July 2006

We appreciate that a lot of families are away at present on their Summer hols - the CSL moorings are three-quarters empty! For those still here, or for those making their sailing plans for the Autumn months, read on...

Soko Cruise Report. In the end, only half the boats turned out for a very breezy sail down to the Sokos on 15/16 Jul - an ideal opportunity to dig out the storm-sails. Very worthwhile; when was the last time you had yours up? It remained dry thoughout the afternoon and evening, allowing a beautifully cool (24 degs) BBQ ashore at Pak Sha Wan, on the North side of N. Soko, anchored in company with about 20 fishing boats and coasters, sheltering from the strong southerlies. Ironic, then, that the storm that arrived at 0200 (yes, the stalwarts were still guarding the embers on the beach) brought bullets from the North, and some extra anchoring training for the crews of a couple of the boats. Another dry and breezy sail home on Sun morning rounded off a very enjoyable and valuable 24-hour sail. You should have been there…

Insurance. We are pleased to recommend an insurance broker by the name of Stella Kwok, who has been able to offer some very good deals for DBYC members. Her contact details: 6123 8445 or She is very can-do, and begins by guaranteeing to reduce your existing premiums by at least 10%. Suggest you get in touch when your insurance next falls due, and mention your DBYC membership.

Upcoming Events. Here’s a list of upcoming events for your diary:

Sun, 30 Jul Typhoon Series, race 7

12/13 Aug HHYC Mirs Bay Race (& pursuit race return)

Sun, 3 Sep ABC Opening Regatta

9/10 Sep DB Derby (see below)

16/17 Sep RHKYC Autumn Regatta

Crew Wanted. These are excellent opportunities for novice crew, with one or two spots available on each race over a more liesurely islands course. Reply here asap if you fancy a sail.

DB Derby. Feedback suggests that afternoon races over islands courses are most popular, so plan on holding a regatta with two, back to back, on Sat and Sun afternoons, 9/10 Sep. Saturday’s race will be followed by a beach BBQ on Sunshine Island and, rather than trying to squeeze in another party on Sun evening, the prize-giving will be held at a later date TBD. Entries are invited for either or both days, with prizes for each, but overall DB Derby prizes will go to boats with results from both days. More details later, but please let us know if you think you will take part, so we can get a feel for numbers…

Annual Subs. For the last few annual subs that are still outstanding, please pop a cheque in the DBYC post-box at the Marina Club, or send direct to DBYC Treasurer, Nigel Easterbrook, at Flat E, Block 5, Parkland Drive, Discovery Bay. Please fill out a new membership application form if any of your details have changed, otherwise just the dosh. Thanks.

See you on the water!

Regards,
Jim Fernie
