Many new and exciting things are happening in the Club...
Inter-active Forums on DBYC.net.
Our apologies for a few glitches in communications. This was because the website was being expanded and this caused some minor problems.
The Club Website has been expanded and we are starting a new (roughly) monthly article on different topics concerning subjects of interest.
Readers may write back with questions or opinions and the Club will grow into a more “grass roots” thing with everybody being able to express themselves. This month the topic is about navigational instruments. Please remember to write and express your opinions or even disagree. You and your opinions are not only valued but will be the most important part of these articles. Visit the Forums here.
Fernie-Bay Incidents.
As most of you will probably know the latest “victim” in Fernie-Bay was Tsuru. Over the past few years we have had incidents on several occasions where our beloved boats suffered collision damage whilst on their mooring. We have no proof, but the evidence points to large trawlers fishing around the moored boats at night. These are not “gentle” scrapes. Last year a boat was sunk and another dismasted, and now Tsuru has ended up with a broken mast and other damage.
The idea is to place a camera and connect it to our website. The camera will have night vision and will continuously record what is going on at the moorings. Advertising this surveillance should, in itself, be a deterrent. In case of damage or theft we will be able to show the police the recording of the previous 24 hours or so. Also, Club members will be able to logon to the website and monitor their boats from anywhere in the world. Your Commodore is now trying to expedite installation of the camera.
Training.
The newly formed Training Sub Committee has had it’s first meeting and the training program has been decided. There will be three beginners sailing courses and one advanced course in 2007.
These will be classroom courses outlining the principles governing the interaction between wind, sail, hull and water. This theoretical course will cost HKD 1,800 and will lead into free sailing on Club boats. We only teach how to sail, we issue no certificates or licenses.
I hope this activity will bring both funds and new blood into the Club. But most importantly it’s about passing on to the next generation all the secrets we have learned about a sport we love. Please spread the word around.
Drag-racing Results.
This time I’m going to leave the comments to the Race Officer who, from committee boat, Outsider, saw the whole race and has written, I think, a fair assessment. Ken Wiltshire owned and organised the whole event and was assisted by Bevin Brakespeare, John Phillips and Mark Borkett as well as a number of other volunteers. A big thank-you to all of them. See Ken’s full report with results here.
Next Event: Stanley Pursuit-to-lunch.
By popular request, a re-run of last year’s pursuit race to a long lunch at Stanley. Scheduled for July 7th, the event will be coordinated by Andy Kung. More details to follow.
