DBYC Newsletters: May 2007

What a busy start to the Summer!

Cracking off with the AGM (some major changes there) and the very successful Tsing Ma Regatta, your Committee have been running around like blue-arsed flies. We have some great events lined up for you over the coming weeks, too. Read on...

DBYC AGM - 25 Apr.  There is plenty of news to report from last month’s Annual General Meeting, including:

New Commodore. After almost 8 years at the helm, Jim Fernie stepped down as Commodore (stepped back, actually, to the new post of Rear Commodore) at the AGM, to be replaced by Paolo Alvera. Paolo is a hugely experienced sailor who has been active in the DBYC for many years, in sail training and more recently chairing the new Handicapping Committee. The Executive Committee has been expanded to help Paolo steer the Club, but it is incumbent on every Member to assist where they can whilst Paolo finds his feet. Best of luck Paolo - we’re all behind you!

New Executive Committee.  The Executive Committee was expanded in order to ‘spread the load’, as follows:

Commodore Paolo Alvera
Rear Commodore Jim Fernie
Treasurer David Wilson
Secretary Andy Kung
Racing Rep Nigel Easterbrook
Cruising Rep Neale Nowosad
Social Rep Michelle Flavel
Training Rep Paolo Alvera
Webmaster Alain Bedard
Safety Officer William Wright
Media & PR Garry Smith

The new post of Vice Commodore remains vacant, as does Merchandise & Sales. If any any Member feels they can offer any assistance on the Executive Committe or any of its sub-committees (eg Racing, Cruising, or Social sub-committees), please get in touch - we can always use the help!

General Secretary.  As well as the changes to the Executive Committee mentioned above, the AGM voted in an increase to our annual subs (see below*), to pay for the establishment of a part-time DBYC General Secretary. The aim is to take a large part of the administrative load off the Club Officers, to allow them to concentrate on their primary roles, arranging and running events, both sailing & social, training, etc, etc.

Tsing Ma Regatta - 28/29 Apr.  The 10th Tsing Ma Regatta was a great success, once again. Full of incident (a MOB and concussion from a swinging boom, to name only two), conditions allowed two very fast races. Wizard set a new record time for Race 1 from DB-Gold Coast of 2:39:30 beating the previous record of 2:54:45 held by Atmosphere. However, Authority swept the board on corrected time, taking 2 first places, and proving just how much speed Torben has been able to squeeze out of his refit. Congratulations to the Authority crew for a great performance. The event report has been drafted here, and will be updated as more action pictures are added.

HSBC Bank International evening - Sat, 26 May.  TMR10 prime sponsor, HSBC Bank International are throwing a drinks and smally-eats party in the Marina Club marquee on Sat, 26 May from 1900-2100 hrs. Crews can collect their free TMR polo-shirts (delayed from the regatta weekend, due delivery problems) on the night. Fragrant Harbour will also be there, with a slide-show of pics from TMR10 and other recent events involving DBYC boats. All DBYC and Marina Club members are very welcome to join in the fun. Spread the word!

Up-coming Events.  The DBYC calendar of events for 2007 has now been published, you can download it here. It includes the following events for the coming weeks:

May 20 cruise
  26 HSBC Bank International evening
Jun 10  cruise
  16/17 Sokos weekend
  30-2 COA Macau Race
Jul 7 Stanley pursuit-to-lunch
  21 DB Regatta
  29 cruise

The cruises will be a simple sail to a lunch somewhere, destination TBD depending on wind & weather - maybe a casual pursuit race on the way there. The Sokos weekend next month will be a repeat of last year’s popular "Save the Sokos" overnight. Details to follow, but pencil those dates into your diary now.

And, last, but not least...

Annual Sunscriptions due now As mentioned above*, the DBYC annual subscription has been increased and is now due. Subscription for Family membership is now $ 600 per year, Individual membership $ 400, and for Junior membership $200. Cheques should be made payable to "Discovery Bay Yacht Club" and posted in the DBYC mail box at the Marina Club, or mailed to the following address:

Existing members need not complete another membership application form unless their details have changed; new members should include a completed form with their cheque payment.

See you on the water!

Regards,
Jim Fernie
