Fourteen boats started the DBYC Middle Island Regatta, including visitors from the ABC, HHYC and RHKYC – with one of these visiting boats destined to win convincingly!
Race Officer, Ken Wiltshire, aboard Committee Boat Outsider, got the fleet away on time into a light Easterly which built steadily allowing longer waterlines to take effect in the chop off Yuen Kok – a day for the bigger boats. New yachts Harlequin (Bavaria Vision 44) and Salalah (Beneteau Oceanis 50) went well, obviously enjoying the conditions, until the latter had to retire with main-boom about to part company.
Lead boats Cloud and Team Simpson Marine had a good tussle, but Olivier Decamps’ T-S-Marine managed to squeeze Line Honours, with Harlequin, Calamansi and T-S-Marine taking top slots on corrected time for Race 1. In the middle of the pack, Xakanaxa lead the way followed by Sex Drive, Soko, Shindig and Thea. It was a very close finish between Soko and Shindig; on the last leg, Soko with a definite lead on Shindig saw her margin reduced to one second at the finish, with Shindig charging from behind under spinnaker. The smaller boat had their own battle with Rosemary in the lead followed closely by Skellum and Arconia. Bliss took “The Rear End”, literally by closing the race, and with the award for her own interpretation of the start line…
In the end, the favourable winds caught the organizer by surprise (pre-occupied at the helm of Shindig), omitting to alert the ABC Finish boat to take up position earlier than scheduled. Bevin Brakespeare’s team aboard Outsider, following the race as safety boat, spotted the problem and promptly laid the line to save the day - thanks Bevin! All participants enjoyed an early arrival at the ABC Middle Island pontoons for a well-deserved happy-hour. Arconia and Soko, in particular for their engine free arrival.
Once again, the ABC Middle Island staff had prepared a fabulous feast, which everyone enjoyed in a lovely setting with perfect temperatures. Many thanks to the ABC General Manager, Philippe de Manny and his MI Staff under the Steve’s supervision for the ABC’s warm hospitality.
