Preceded by a couple of Rules & Tactics lectures to blow away the pre-season cobwebs, a weekend of Drag Racing was arranged in lieu of the Spring TMR to keep the crews on their toes. Drag Racing is a fun training session where the boats complete a normal start and beat to a windward mark, where they finish - then the fleet returns to the start to repeat as desired. It’s a fun, but very effective way of improving your crew’s confidence and ability at the start.
Although a sail training weekend, it was arranged in a racing format, from start to windward mark. Seven ‘races’ were completed over the course of the weekend, followed by a couple of beer calls on Sunshine beach to swop war stories.
“I was on starboard!” versus “Well I was in irons!” - that sort of thing…
Arconia dominated Saturday’s races by picking the shifts, but by Sunday afternoon, it was very clear that everyone’s performance was improving - both on the start line and on the beat. Overdraft, looking sexy in matching crew shirts, had perhaps the best start - right under the committee boat on the gun at 7 kts and winching hard. Sabi Star was learning fast, though, and collected the most wins for a convincing first place on points, with Shockwave a close second. Just as well it was only training, so we won√t be changing the handicaps!

And if you want to use your freshly-honed starting skills on other HK events this month - try the RHKYCs end-of-season Spring Regatta in the Harbour on 17/18 May and the ABC 2-Legged Race to Rocky Harbour on 24/25 May. More details from racing@dbyc.net
