The DBYC held its Christmas Party at The Cavern in Lan Kwai Fong this year - again, something a little different. Given the Pop Legends nature of the show, quite a few got into the swing of it, dressing from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s…
There were compliments a-plenty for the excellent four course a-la-carte dinner, the cracking Legends show, and the support band, The Bones. It was impossible to stay seated, and the dance floor was chock-a from the soup course onwards. As ever, this was a chance to socialize off the water and meet the rest of the Family Members - ones we may not see out on the water very often, but sailing supporters none-the-less.
It was also a good opportunity to acknowledge and thank all the volunteer members of the DBYC’s Executive Committee for their efforts on the Club’s behalf. Bottles of bubbly (and much raucous applause) were awarded to the Treasurer, Nigel Easterbrook, Secretary, Andy Kung, David Wilson (Racing), Neale Nowosad (Cruising), Paolo Alvera (Training) and John Karas (Race Officer). Erica Cartledge (Social) and Alain Bedard (Webmaster) unfortunately missed the party, but our thanks to them all for arranging and supporting the Club’s many events throughout the year.
There was even some fizz left over for Commodore, Jim Fernie, who toasted the Members, thanking them for their participation in the various regattas and cruises throughout 2005, and looking forward to their continued support for the Club’s events in the coming year.
"The more boats we have entering our events, the better. It takes no more effort to organize a regatta for 20 boats than it does 10 - it’s just twice as much fun!" he said, repeating the theme from last year.
The Cavern is part of the Chris Lenz’s Igors Group of restaurants (along with Stormy Weather, The Boathouse, Wildfire, etc) - all regular sponsors of prizes for the various DBYC events. So the choice of venue was also an opportunity to thank Lenzie for his generous support throughout the year. Note that he has now bought himself a Prout 70 luxury cruising cat - so watch out for the mega-party boat on the start line next year
Sadly, the evening was also the last opportunity to farewell Ken Wiltshire (of Klementine fame), who is being dragged back to NZ by his company. He is looking for new employment, though, in order to be able to return to HK, so one never knows - we might see him back before long…
Also departing, when the South China Sea conditions improve (early Spring, perhaps...?), are Fred & Judy, who are off again on their world travels aboard Wings, heading back to the Philippines and then, to quote Fred, "Who knows - maybe Singapore?". We wish them bon voyage and the best of luck for their next 14 years of circumnavigation.
Once again we look forward to bigger and better DBYC ’fun & friendly‘ regattas and cruises in the coming year.
